Happy June! Now go buy a ticket…

Fans and friends:  it’s the end of the month, which means you’re probably getting paid.  Don’t wait till mid-month to buy your ticket for our summer music benefit–ten bucks is all you need for a fantastic evening of local indie-rock!  Our headliner Bodybox features occacional AaA voice Nick Kennedy lending his talent on bass.  It’s an all-ages show at Louie G’s, which has awesome pizza and burgers, a range of brews on tap, and a small classic arcade with skee-ball.  SKEE-BALL!!!  Besides being a rad place to take your kids now that school’s out for summer (without some weird mouse-man), the whole place is fully wheel-chair accessible.

Events like these are a major way in which Ask An Atheist stays on the air–contributions and advertisers alone don’t cover our costs.  Coming out to the show will help keep a secular voice on terrestrial radio and will show our local Puget Sound community that atheists are fun-loving patrons worthy of future collaboration.  Help us out, purchase your tickets in advance, and see you on Friday, June 21st!

Vote for “Ask an Atheist” for Best Local Podcast

Last year, we participated in Evening Magazine’s “Best of Western Washington” Awards - a local distinction that nets any winner a decent amount of positive attention. Thanks to all of you, we came in 2nd Place in a field of 47 candidates for the Best Local Podcast award.

We aim to win this year, but we need your help!

Evening Magazine, the local television show that hosts this annual contest will put a huge media spotlight on our little show if we pull off this surprise upset. Our winning is good for the show, good for local and regional atheism and good for atheist media visibility!

Thank you for all the support you’ve given our show in its first two years on the air and for the support you continue to give it! It only takes a moment and the impact for Ask an Atheist could be tremendous.

Also, it would really make the local fundamentalists angry if you did.

Voting for us easy!

He is now an accomplished, nationally touring standup comic and the creator/owner of the Mobile Asylum tour.

Stream-a-thon Press Release

ATHEIST RADIO SHOW HOLDS TELETHON FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY

TACOMA – On July thirteenth through the fourteenth, the cast and crew of the Tacoma-based radio show, “Ask an Atheist” undertook an endurance contest for civil rights.

For twenty-four hours, the sleep-deprived heathens put on an internet telethon from their studio in Tacoma’s Oldtown to raise money to preserve marriage equality for Washington’s same-sex couples.

“After we caught wind that the Religious Right and their allies had gotten enough signatures to challenge marriage equality, it wasn’t even a question that we needed to do something” says Sam Mulvey, one of Ask an Atheist‘s producers. “This is a textbook case of religious privilege. These are historically powerful people acting like they’re being persecuted because everyone else isn’t forced to follow their narrow religious doctrines.”

The coalition behind the opposition to same-sex marriage rights in Washington includes frequent culture war participants as James Dobson’s Focus on the Family, Phyllis Schaffly’s Eagle Forum, and the leadership of the Catholic Church, who gathered signatures for the referendum during church services.

“People can believe whatever they want,” says Mulvey, “but when they enter the arena of public policy, they have to put their dogma aside and argue based on evidence. The fact is that there is no fact-based reason to oppose equal rights for same-sex couples. The only reasons to oppose LBGT rights are religious reasons and the Supreme Court has been clear that this just isn’t good enough.”

Throughout the event, cast and crew members of Ask an Atheist, answered questions from listeners, and raised nearly two-thousand dollars from supporters in the Puget Sound area and around the world.

“When we see the attacks on gay and lesbian equality,” says fellow show producer, Mike Gillis, “we see a lot of the same theocratic rogues gallery that harrasses, maligns and stereotypes atheists and rationalists, doing it for exactly the same reasons. What right would I have to call myself a supporter of civil rights and equality if I remained silent about intolerance towards someone else?”
