open bibleThis week’s look at the funny, the scary and just plain weird passages in humanity’s holy texts comes from listener Paul from Brisbane, Australia. We return the Holy Qu’ran of Islam, which reiterates its horrific depiction of human rights and family values.

    Qur’an 23:1-6 (Yusuf Ali translation – 1938):

The Believers must (eventually) win through—those who
humble themselves in their prayers; who avoid vain talk; who are active in
deeds of charity; who abstain from sex; except with those joined to them in
the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess—for
(in their case) they are free from blame.

Yep. You read that correctly. Sex out of wedlock is bad…unless it’s with someone you’ve taken by force as property. And this is from a translation made in the 20th Century. Another instance of a book heralded as a beacon of wisdom and morality getting the issue of rape and slavery just plain wrong.

If you have a passage of holy scripture that you find funny, scary or just plain weird, send it our way. Whether it’s from the Bible, the Qur’an, the Bhagavad Gita, the Book of Mormon, or even Dianetics, click on the big, red, shiny button at the top of the page and we may even read it on the show!

If you’re a fan of Ask an Atheist, you’ve probably already heard about the “Adopt an Atheist” campaign of the Catholic League, the stage name of perennial blowhard pundit, Bill Donahue.

In it, he suggests that Catholics adopt one of us to somehow discover closeted Christians in our community.   How they intend to do this, beyond spamming the offices of American Atheists, is not explained.

However, I think it’s a great idea, and I’ve volunteered myself for their adoption program in this open letter I’ve submitted to their web site.

open bibleThis week’s look at the funny, the scary and just plain weird passages in humanity’s holy texts comes from listener Christoph from Germany, we look at the religion of Zoroastrianism, a religion that predates both Christianity and Islam.

It has an odd definition of evil. Today’s passage comes from the Avesta, Zoroastrianism’s sacred text

    Vendidad, Fargard 17: 1-3:

    1. Zarathushtra asked Ahura Mazda: ‘O Ahura Mazda, most beneficent Spirit, Maker of the material world, thou Holy One! Which is the most deadly deed whereby a man offers up a sacrifice to the Daevas1?’

    2. Ahura Mazda answered: ‘It is when a man here below, combing his hair or shaving it off, or paring off his nails, drops them2 in a hole or in a crack3.

    3. ‘Then by this transgression of the rites, Daevas (demons) are produced in the earth; by this transgression of the rites, those Khrafstras (noxious creatures) are produced in the earth which men call lice, and which eat up the corn in the corn-field and the clothes in the wardrobe.

So, yeah. If you cut your hair and nails, they’ll turn into demons and lice. I can’t imagine why this never became a major world religion. No, seriously. This is no sillier than some of the stuff in the Bible, a book with talking donkeys and unicorns.

  • Great Neptune! Ask an Atheist is an Official Friend Of Aquaman!

My impassioned speech in defense of the King of the Seas at the beginning of last week’s show has not gone unheard!

Rob Kelly, the man in charge the excellent Aquaman Shrine fan site and one half of the talent behind the always-entertaining Fire and Water podcast has awarded us a coveted status as official members of F.O.A.M. — Friends Of Aquaman.

It even comes with an official certificate!

As I said on the show, Aquaman is a badass. Ignore the naysayers with their scoffing and their jokes, because this is a guy who doles out justice by throwing polar bears at his foes! He can command the likes of Sharktopus, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Megashark and Giant Octopus, and any of the minions of Cthulhu!

Big thanks to Rob at the Aquaman Shrine for the recognition! You have an excellent site and terrific taste in superheroes!
