Boy Scouts will now allow girls to join, but still won’t allow atheists.

  • BSA Timeline
    • 1910: BSA incorporated, President Taft is first honorary president, Teddy Roosevelt first honorary vice-president.
    • 1911: 1st BSA Handbook for Boys, published. Includes: “no boy can grow into the best kind of citizenship without recognizing his obligation to God.”
    • 1913: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints adopts Scouting as the activity arm of its Mutual Improvement Association for young men, becoming the first religious group to sponsor Scouting as part of its ministry.
    • 1930: Cub Scouts allowed
    • 1936: Den Mothers can register
    • 1940: Irving Berlin establishes the God Bless America Foundation, donating all royalties from his most famous song to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
    • 1950: Cub Scout Promise changed to add the line “to do my duty to God and my country.”
    • 2000: In “Boy Scouts of America v. Dale,” the Supreme Court of the United States rules that BSA and other private organizations have the right to set membership standards, including exclusions of gay Scouts and Scouters.
    • 2013: Gay scouts allowed
    • 2015: Gay scout leaders allowed
    • 2015: New rank advancement requirement where scouts tell how they’ve done their duty to god
    • 2017: Trans scouts allowed
